Contaminated Groundwater

Hydro-geological Information has become an important element within the areas of geotechnical and geo-environmental investigation and planning, and especially significant when assessing the impact of contaminates.

On many landfill, brownfield or other ex-industrial sites there is a risk of pollutants migrating or draining through the soil and contaminating the ground water. This can pose specific problems in relation to de-contaminating as access can be difficult and the associated costs significant. Once this occurs there is an ongoing risk to the environment and potentially human health if the site is subsequently developed for occupied use.

Remediation

In a situation such as this, the aims are threefold. In the first instance to locate the source of contaminants, identify the likely spread, and any potential targets (such as streams or aquifers) which may be affected. The second objective is then to contain the pollution as much as possible and remove the threat of further transference. Lastly, it remains to remediate the groundwater with the aim of reducing percentage contamination over time to within acceptable limits, and thereby significantly reduce any potential liability and risk to identified targets.

Impact on site use

In general the Hydro-Geology of a site will strongly influence its mobility characteristics and thereby both the building design and construction methods. Eaton Geotechnics Ltd has both the experience and expertise to provide hydro-geological advice and recommendations fully supported by computer modelling and risk assessments.

Information about the groundwater in a specific area can also be utilised to establish the feasibility of private or commercial Water Wells. These are becoming increasingly popular since they provide both an eco-friendly and sustainable source of water for a variety of applications from residential /domestic to small scale private or commercial irrigation.
